Crops are generally your main source of silver. Whenever a helper is not busy elsewhere, that helper can provide income with premium trees (those that cost gold) or any crops. Short-term crops usually give more silver per hour, but it is best to keep helpers busy most or all of the time you are away. That requires long-term crops.
